Palawan Island

Palawan Island

The Island is a lush green island with some of the best spots to dive in the country. The dive sites as well as the luxury resorts are located at El Nido at the north end of the island. Go there for seashells butterflies jungle walks and the Tabon Caves an ancient burial site.

The area is 500 km southwest of Manila. The capital of is Puerto Princessa, here is also a cute airport. If you drive ca 100 km north by main road and then 50 km west (this trip takes approximately 3-4 hours), you will find yourself in Port Barton village. If you want to be secluded from the civil world, this is the place to be. I loved the village!

The electricity is there only from 6-11PM, but I haven't seen more happy people. We stayed in Greenviews Resort. I highly recommend this place due to friendly staff and the beauty around the place.

If you are keen on wreck diving be sure to visit Busuanga island north of El Nido. In the midst of the second World War the American army decided to heavily damage the Japanese Imperial supply lines, which they did in the bay of Busuanga island. Now days a dozen or so of Japanese warships and supply ships litter the sea bottom in this bay. All these ships are accessible to wreck divers, an absolute must as far as I am concerned.

While in this particular area (Busuanga island) don't miss out on the stunning lakes on Coron island, which lies right next to Busuanga. Don't forget to bring insect repellent when visiting the Coron lakes!

Furthermore the island remains a tropical paradise, it's rather cheap, lush, densely populated and lacks the effects of mass-tourism. For me it was only possible to take money out of the ATM in Puerto princesa, so when travelling from Puerto Princesa up North don't forget to stock cash.

Palawan is a last frontier, especially for people that don't like meeting heaps of backpackers or other tourists.

That is why Josie and I will travel again soon. We can get lost here and find ourselves when the stress of daily life here is too much. I dream of one day living here and walking the beaches everyday. Maybe fish in the early morning and sea shell pick in the low tides. The air is breathtakingly clean and the waters that bounce off the beaches is crystal clear. Fish abound everywhere you snorkel and it seems time stands still here.

All ya gotta do is hop on a plane, fall asleep and wake up in Paradise.
